Bass fishing mistakes
Sometimes what makes a good fisherman great is knowing not so much what to do, but rather, what NOT to do. All too often out on the water I see very capable anglers make mistakes that otherwise could have made for a good day of fishing. In this article, I want to point out these common mistakes that both experienced and rookie fisherman make and hopefully open your eyes to new and better fishing! #1. The "Confidence Bait" Flaw This is probably the biggest mistake I see anglers make on the water. Every fisherman has a confidence bait. That one lure that always seems to catch fish and outdoes the other lures in your tackle box. Ask Denny Brauer what his confidence bait is and he'll tell you...
Springtime bass
I suppose the bass have finally figured out that spring is here and it is time to go shallow. It seems like we humans have been experiencing spring-like conditions for several weeks, but the bass have been waiting, and now is the time to get out there and catch 'em. The spawn is to bass fishermen/women what the rut is to deer hunters. It is the time of year the big 'uns become more vulnerable than any other time of the year. Recently, Benji Hohenberger and I headed over to pre-fish a tournament at Cedar Creek Lake. After fishing for an hour or so, we headed into a small creek looking for bass and boy, was I surprised. The water was just clear enough to spot a nice bass on the bed with the help of...

What size? color?, straight tail? curly tail?, salt or no salt?; what rig to use them on, drop-shot? Carolina rigged?, weightless?, when are the best times to use each one? Then add in the endless variety of lizards, grubs, jerkbaits, freakbaits, tubes, and creatures, and you end up with more questions than answers. In the following article I will try to list the most effective plastic baits and presentations that catch not only numbers, but big bass as well, whether it is in a lake, pond or river...

When Launching a New Business, Bring Plenty of Cigarettes for the Zombies Under the Bridge
The following piece was to appear in a Miami magazine (which shall remain nameless) that never got beyond its first issue which was to include a story on a Miami chopper builder, a downtown jeweler, and a local bikini designer. The parentheticals are my comments after-the-fact.Let me tell you a true story about a young woman who got up early one morning looking for a fish market and ended up on the cover of a magazine. It's six o'clock on a Sunday morning. The sun still isn't up and I'm waiting below the Watson Island bridge between Miami and Miami Beach feeling a little foolish holding a bejeweled bra in my hand and a little uncomfortable watching the homeless emerging from the shadows with the...
Shark Fishing: A New Found Addiction
Shark Fishing From the Beach It is a well known fact that in the summertime many Sharks move from the deeper waters offshore into inland waterways and beaches. Why do they do this? Well the Sharks seek warmer shallow waters to carry out mating rituals and to either lay eggs or give live birth. So why is this important? It is very important if you are interested in swimming or in landing huge fish from the bank. There is no other type of fishing (that I know of) where the angler has an exceptional chance of hooking on to a 500lb plus fish while fishing from the bank.Living near the Gulf of Mexico during my youth my family would take at least one vacation each summer to the beach. Week long...
Tips To Getting Sponsored For Fishing Tournaments
One of the most important steps in getting sponsored to fish tournaments (whether you fish for bass, walleye, crappie, musky, redfish, marlin, etc.) is to focus on what YOU CAN DO for your sponsor not what your sponsor can do for you. When trying to obtain sponsorship from a company, first make a list of the things you could provide for your sponsor.Put yourself in the potential sponsors shoes. Does he want to give you money so you can fish...

How To Correctly Choose The Right Fishing Tackle
I recently had a conversation with "wonder bread boy" about a serious dilemma he was having. It seems that he has misplaced, lost or surrendered, to his ex, the bulk of his fishing gear. Now, this alone is a monumental problem in itself, not the lost or misplaced part, but the trying to ask your ex for something that means absolutely nothing to her but would certainly open up a humongous can of nightcrawlers should you attempt to ask for it back..."Hi sweet.""Oh, it's YOU.""How ya been?""Cut the chit chat wonder boy, what is it you want?""Well,(gulp) it seems-snookums- that when you tossed me out into the street and took legal ownership of all my bank accounts and left me with little or nothing to...

Drug Treatment Centers As Paths To Correction
Drug treatment program is a relatively new field. It only started sometime within the last 50 years. It must be understood that many of the areas of studies in drug treatment are yet to be perfected. However, there are institutions that are gaining much progress at fast rates. But the reason for this rise is basically attributed to the dramatic rise of the addicted sections of the society. Add to this the presence of the funding institutions that may provide for the payments incurred during treatment. Most of these are private health insurance companies, which made the inclusion for such causes in most of their health insurance plans.Prior to the development of the drug treatment centers, drug...
Bass Fishing - Texas Rig
I've caught bass on crankbaits, spinners, plugs and others. But for me, the most fun is plastic worms on a Texas Rig. Don't get me wrong, catching a largemouth bass is catching a largemouth bass, and I'd gladly catch one with my mother's toe nail if they'd bite it. What's my fascination with plastic worms and the Texas Rig?Simplicity in changing baits from color to color and style, they are weedless and effective. But there's more to it. I love them because I feel they are more interactive and you have to fool the bass more than with other baits. If you throw out a worm and just reel it in, you are not likely to catch many fish. You have to know how to work it and you have to be very patient in your...
Fishing Rods
Fishing rods are a classic tool for catching fish, dating back at least to ancient Egypt, and possibly even further back than that. They can be easily made from all sorts of different things, ranging from plants like bamboo to modern man-made materials. While fishing rods were once essential for catching food, today nets tend to be used instead, with fishing rods being used more often as a hobby or for sports fishing. Although the specifics are different depending on the kind of fish that is being fished for, the general idea is to put some kind of bait on the end of the line, throw it into the water, and then use a wheel to pull the line up again once a fish has been hooked. More sophisticated lines...
Fishing For Bass In Deep Water
When fishing for bass in deep water try a spinnerbait that you have confidence in and have used to catch fish before. If the fish are inactive try a slow study retrieve. Spinnerbaits as you know, produce a vibration that attracts bass. Use a spinnerbait that has tandem blades and fish from shallow to deep. You can also use smaller blades that will allow the spinnerbait to run deeper. Try a 3/4 to 1 ounce spinnerbait.Spinnerbaits can:Draw bass from farther away than most lures. Help find the fish faster. Imitate more kinds of baitfish.A nice rod for a spinnerbait is a 6 1/2- 7 foot medium/heavy rod. In clear, calm water try a dark color that will not blend in with the sky when a bass sees it...

Bass Fishing With Carolina Keepers
Carolina Keepers may be a godsend. If you're like me and don't like to spend your valuable fishing time tying knots, these are for you.If you use Carolina Rigs, you are going to love these babies. They make the rigging process so much faster and you can change leader lengths on the fly. They can also be used for catfishing and using live bait. My preference is plastics.Rather than having to tie to a swivel, then tie a leader to a swivel, then tie the leader to the hook (already I'm getting tired), you simple tie to the hook. Here's how it works...To put a Carolina Keeper on your line you simply squeeze the Carolina Keeper with needle-nose pliers. It has a slit that opens when squeezed and you place...

Successful Fishing: The mysterious "e" Factor. There has always been a strange, and to this day, unsolved mysterious theory in the fishing world. My wife knows of this theory and she thinks I am crazy, paranoid, and maybe even a little hard up.The theory is based on secrets that have been held by a small but priveleged group of men, who have sworn secrecy and taken blood oaths, in order to keep the modern societies from crumbling.I reveal this secret at great peril and with no apparent regard to the ramifications that may take place, out of an act of final frustration.I am tired of getting outfished by my wife!!I see you there, looking puzzled and confused--but let me explain.I first started noticing...

Fishing Unfamiliar & Fly-in Lakes
Fishing Unfamiliar & Fly-in LakesThere is a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment - the pride of craft - that comes with a successful day's fishing on a new, unfamiliar or fly-in lake, whether it is a limit of bass, a few walleyes for shore lunch, or a trophy pike. Not because putting fish in the boat is the measure of a successful outing, but because that success underlines the fact that the angler has effectively adapted to the existing fishing situations and conditions, making necessary changes in bait / lure selection, presentations and locations. That, in itself, is no small feat, even at fly-in lakes which supposedly teem with naive fish. Let me assure you that we always breathe a sigh of...

Fishing The Power Drop Shot Rig
Most people believe that the drop-shot rig is only for finesse fishing, but there is more than one way to skin a cat! (or Fish), as the case may be. The new Power Drop-Shot style started by Kotaro Kiriyama, is fast becoming the way to bigger and better bags on many of the tournament trails.Drop-shot rigs consist of a hook tied above a sinker that is placed at the end of the line so that the lure suspends off the bottom. Conventional tackle consists of light action spinning gear and 4-8 pound line, and the tactic is usually deployed vertically in deep water.Kiriyama says "Drop-Shotting is about presenting a soft plastic lure in a manner that is different from Texas rigging or Carolina rigging." Hurricane Damage to Oil Rigs and Environmental Spill Concerns
Our oil and gas drilling rigs are a national asset, as their production and collection effects the supply side of the economic equation. Our country runs on fuel and the flow of these fuels and crude is a necessity to the ability of our civilization to operate efficiently. When things break down or stop due to hostile weather storms we feel it in our economic output and productivity. In fact just about everything you buy has been delivered by something using fuel and most of us need and use natural gas for many things. We must pit these needs of our civilization against the environmental costs associated with them. We indeed cannot afford to make trades, which might cause dead zones of sea life or...
Saltwater Fly Fishing -- A Tide Runs Through It
Saltwater fly fishing is all the rage these days. This excitement is quite understandable because there's hardly anything more thrilling to a saltwater fly rodder than a bluefish blitz, a tailing red drum off the coast of NC, or a bonefish battle on the flats of south Florida waters. If you are just getting started in saltwater fly-fishing, there are a few tips that will make your conversion from freshwater easier and more productive.Get some gear just for fishing saltwater You're best bet is to get another fly rod and reel for your saltwater fishing adventures. Your freshwater gear is undoubtedly going to be lighter than may be necessary to deliver that big fly in a stiff offshore breeze, and...
Crashing The Hatch
The "Dream Stream" section of the South Platte River is a beautiful winding stream that's filled with trophy trout. Deep bends filled with large boulders and logs are typical fishing holes in this section of the South Platte. The nickname "Dream Stream" is a perfect description of this tailwater fishery.Like most famous tailwater fishing rivers, the Dream Stream gets a lot of pressure from fly fisherman. It's not uncommon on weekends for parking lots to be filled, and every bend of the first two miles of the river having a fly fisherman in it...all in search of those trophy fish for which this section of water is reknowned. As a spin fisherman, its intimidating to read the reports on the Dream...
Extreme Bass Fishing For Beginners
Hello future "Bass Masters". I have a question for you. Have you ever been fishing and it seems like you can not buy a bite? It happens more often than you would think. Some days the fish just will not cooperate at all. These days do not have to be a total loss. You can use every day as a learning experience. The first thing you need to do is start a fishing log where you can log everything you need to remember about the fishing trip so you can use these references for future trips. Start out by logging the weather conditions such as temperature, wind speed and direction, was it a cloudy or a clear day? Log the water conditions such as was the water clear, stained or muddy. What lures...
My Fishing Trip With The Pro
I was in Southwest Florida and was asked to go fishing by one of the pro bass fisherman there. Thinking I would learn a lot that day, I graciously accepted his kind offer. So, we begin our trip to Lake Okeechobee about 4 hours away. We put this bass boat in and away we went......full throttle! I soon realized these boats don't have a slow or medium speed, when you hit the key, you're on your way as fast as the boat would go. When you stop, you stop completely. Anyway, here we go about 90 miles an hour down Lake Okeechobee. Then we began fishing. I was so excited, I mean fishing this lake that is known for big bass and in this bass boat that can go a million miles an hour and with a pro too, what...
